Cashew kernels are packed to protect them from moisture, air, breakage and infestation on their way to market. The standard export pack is a vacuum-sealed tin with a nitrogen flush, in one of two classic sizes — 11.34 kg (25 lb) and 22.68 kg (50 lb) — usually two tins to a master carton (~45.36 kg). Retail formats use flexible laminated pouches for snack and family packs. Because cashews are high in oil, they are dried to about 5% moisture and sealed under vacuum/N₂ to prevent rancidity and hold shelf life. This page covers why packing matters, the vacuum and nitrogen methods, tin and carton formats, and the moisture and labelling checks before packing.

Why Packing Matters

Kernels are fragile and oil-rich, so packing has three jobs: keep out moisture and air (which cause rancidity and mould), protect whole kernels from crushing, and bar insects. Good packing is what lets a graded lot arrive at its outturn value rather than degraded — it protects the margin the whole plant worked to build.

Vacuum Packing

Vacuum sealing removes air from the pack so the oil in the kernels cannot oxidise and go rancid, and so the kernels are held firm against breakage. It is the baseline for export tins and premium retail. The equipment is on the cashew nut vacuum packing machine page.

Nitrogen Flushing

For the best shelf life, the pack is flushed with food-grade nitrogen (N₂) as the vacuum is drawn, displacing residual oxygen. This inert atmosphere further slows rancidity and keeps kernels crisp. Only food-grade CO₂/N₂ is permitted under the AFI standard.

Master Cartons & Export Units

Export tins ship two to a master carton of new, pest-free corrugated board rated at least 200-lb test / 32 ECT, sealed without staples. Each carton is marked with product/brand, packer, grade, net weight, origin, buyer’s mark, destination and a legible lot code — the marking rules that make a lot traceable and contract-compliant.

Retail Pouch Formats

For consumers, kernels go into flexible laminated pouches — multi-layer films with strong oxygen, moisture and light barriers — as snack packs and family packs, sealed by heat, adhesive or resealable zip. Paper/cardboard boxes and gift tins serve the premium end.

Moisture & QC Before Packing

Kernels are checked to about 5% moisture with a moisture meter, and passed for defects, foreign matter and metal before packing — too much moisture invites mould, too little makes kernels brittle. This QC gate protects the grade all the way to the buyer. Grade and moisture limits follow the AFI specification; shipments are classified under HS code 0801.32.

Packaging Materials & Equipment

The materials themselves — woven PP bags, corrugated master boxes and, for branded consumer packs, retail pouches filled on a retail packaging machine — are supplied through the processing supplies range, specified to your grades and markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are cashews packed for export? In vacuum-sealed, nitrogen-flushed tins — commonly 11.34 kg (25 lb) and 22.68 kg (50 lb) — two tins to a corrugated master carton, marked with grade, weight, origin and lot code.

What is the standard cashew tin size? The two classic export sizes are 11.34 kg (25 lb) and 22.68 kg (50 lb), with the 50 lb tin the most common, usually two per master carton.

Why nitrogen flush cashews? Nitrogen displaces oxygen inside the pack, slowing the oil in the kernels from oxidising and going rancid, and keeping the kernels crisp — extending shelf life well beyond an air-filled pack.

How long do vacuum-packed cashews last? Sealed under vacuum/N₂ and stored cool, dark and dry, kernels keep well for many months (raw kernels longer than roasted). Once opened or if the seal fails, shelf life drops as oxygen and moisture get in.
